Fascinating Ideas, Tried and True
Venting a Cat's Litter Box Saves Money

With the heat and humidity this summer, sharing a room with a cat’s litter box can be a smelly endeavor. Why not add a vent to your cat’s litter box and vent those smells outside? A simple vent can be made by cutting up a white plastic square (2.4" x 2.4") rain water downspout. Ten foot lengths are available at Lowes or Home Depot for $13.50 each. You will only need one. Use thin white tape to close off the ends as needed.

I used some other vinyl plastic parts in the installation shown, but I could have made the entire vent out of just the ten foot downspout tube. In this installation, I also added a $14 biscuit fan from Amazon just above the cat’s litter box, but I found I didn’t really need it. The chimney effect of the vertical tube results in a natural air flow from the litter box to the outside.

Note the pipe is not attached to the top of the litter box. The litter box can slide out from under the vent so that the litter can be scooped and changed. You will have to open a square hole in the top of the plastic litter box cover so that the smells can go into the vent pipe.

I found I didn’t have to change the litter as much with this vent. Litter seemed to last about twice as long. So this vent system paid for itself in about a month, and I am now saving money on kitty litter. My cat doesn’t seem to mind either.
